In the Shrimad Devi Bhagwat Puran, Adhyaya16; Narad Muni; known in ancient Hindu religious traditions as the sage who imparts wisdom, describes the power and immense benefits which can be derived by the Chanting of the Gayatri Mantra.
Narad Muni says –
The chanting of this mantra once a day eradicates all the sins committed during the course of that day.
If chanted 10 times it eradicated all the sins committed during the course of the day and night.
If chanted 100 times it eradicates all the sins committed during the whole month.
If chanted 1000 times all the sins committed during the course of the whole year are eradicated.
100,000 Chants will free one from all the sins which one has committed during the entire life time.
1 Million Chants will remove all the sins committed during all other births and reincarnations.
10 Million Chants will give one liberation from the cycle of life and death.
Narad Muni further says that one should face eastwards and recite the Gayatri Mantra. Kara Mala, Sphatik and Sandalwood Malas are the recommended Malas for Japa of the Gayatri Mantra.

This truly is amazing. Only question is, if I do 10 million chants, how can it be divided per day. I mean, can we do this over a 3 year period.

since I am outside of india and we don't have gurus/teachers available to explain/clarify and so kindly help with some simple questions I asked above. I am waiting to start but without some clarification I am not able to.

kindly clarify something for me-- my purpose is to eradicate sins so can I add "om namah shivai" as the last line to this mantra or should I NOT add that.

sorry to trouble you since I know you are quite busy but I really do need your guidance. I will be chanting this gayatri mantra for a long time and so I need to make sure I am chanting the right one and so I asked my previous question above so kindly reply to me.

will the Gayatri mantra give same benefit if it is chanted while walking, car driving or even while doing mundane tasks as long as I am facing eastward OR must it be done only after a bath , sitting down in front of a puja place during sunrise/sunset and also requires incense.
