Since the Dadri lynching, Beef and Beef eaters is one of most talked about topics these days. There is also a great debate going on whether ancient Indians, especially Sadhus and Yogis consumed Beef. I have nothing against people who eat Beef, each one is free to choose his path and what to eat and others have no right to interfere as long as he does not consume his fellow humans. However, to understand the relation between Hinduism and Beef eating it is necessary to have a deeper look into what is the real purpose of being a Hindu.
Hinduism has always and still encompasses within its fold a section of those who take the unconventional path to seek God and the unknown, like the Aghora Panth Sadhus. Some of these Sadhus do anything to subdue their senses, including eating Beef, human feces, having sex with corpses and consumption of alcohol. Thus, it is unwise to link Beef as a traditional ancient Hindu food in the Vedic times.
It is often said that Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life, very true but what is the real purpose of that way of life can be understood from some of the saying of Mahatma Gandhi, which, I have mentioned below for the benefit of readers.
Mahatma Gandhi said that Hinduism was the relentless pursuit of the truth and it might become morbid, fatigued, lethargic, and inactive from time to time, yet it will always burst forth with a new brilliance, which has never been seen before.
Mahatma Gandhi also compared Hinduism to the River Ganga, pure at its source in the Himalayas, but accumulating filth and dirt as it weaves it course through the plains taking the form of that region, but it always retains its inherent purity. He also stated that all the great truths found about God and Creation in other religions is contained in Hinduism and what is not contained is inconsequential.
