Isha Upanishad on Non-Duality

The Isha Upanishad a sacred religious scripture of the Hindu religion, is the smallest of the Upanishad’s, it comprises of only 18 verses. This Upanishad is commonly believed to have been composed about 2100 thousand to 2400 years back; the exact dating is not available.

This was the Upanishad which was held in the highest esteem by none other than Mahatma Gandhi. And of the 18 verses contained in the Upanishad, Gandhiji stated that the first verse contained the highest and deepest possible wisdom. This was the wisdom Gandhiji said was the key to the survival of the Hindu religion.

Let’s have a look at this first verse; numerous meanings have been attributed to this verse. This verse is the essence of the Isha Upanishad. In my opinion this is the verse which speaks of the principle of Non-Duality.The Non-Dual state of existence is the only real state of existence, everything else is an illusion.

ॐ ईशा वास्यमिदँ सर्वं यत्किञ्च जगत्यां जगत्।
तेन त्यक्तेन भुञ्जीथा मा गृधः कस्यस्विद्धनम्॥
Isha vasyamida sarva yatkijcha jagatya jagat l
Ten tyatken bhujitha ma grudh: kasyasviddhanam ll

Meaning
Everything in existence, in this Universe is contained in the Ever-Existent. The Ever-Existent is present in everything [we live inside the thing, the thing lives inside us].When one realizes this, and surrenders oneself to that Ever-Existent, then only does one enjoy the ultimate bliss. One must not covet, be jealous or malicious and try to harm others, as in doing so one harms oneself, for everything is one.
