SRI AUROBINDO'S NON-DUAL EXPERIENCES

Enlightenment or Nirvana is the final frontier of Meditation, Yoga, Prayer or any other form of Spiritual activity like self-inquiry or any such action, which is aimed at acquiring more knowledge and understanding. As the soul, life energy or prana, which powers the body, feels restricted by the physical dimensions of the body it starts looking outside the body, and initiates numerous processes all aimed at overcoming the physical dimensions of the body. This state of enlightenment or nirvana, which is the final goal, can also be called the Non-Dual state.

But no one really knows what happens after enlightenment. I have described what I feel is the process which gets you there, and the probable experiences in THE TRUTH OF ENLIGHTENMENT .However the experiences of those believed to have attained enlightenment are either not clear or that the real meaning as stated by them, who crossed that final frontier cannot be grasped.

Enlightenment is the Non-Dual experience, where the subject totally merges into everything and everything merges into him, he becomes one with everything, and everything becomes him. These experiences of enlightenment or total Non-Duality may wary from person to person, and may last a few hours or days or an entire lifetime.

What has really made an impression on my mind, are the experiences in NON-DUALITY, experienced by Sri Aurobindo, when he was an under trial, for actively participating in the Indian independence movement. While in jail, he was visited by Swami Vivekananda, who instructed him on the working of the super-consciousness. The under mentioned experts are taken from Sri Aurobindo’s Uttarpara Speech 30 May 1909

“I looked at the jail that secluded me from men and it was no longer by its high walls that I was imprisoned; no, it was Vasudeva who surrounded me. I walked under the branches of the tree in front of my cell but it was not the tree, I knew it was Vasudeva, it was Sri Krishna whom I saw standing there and holding over me his shade. I looked at the bars of my cell, the very grating that did duty for a door and again I saw Vasudeva. It was Narayana who was guarding and standing sentry over me. Or I lay on the coarse blankets that were given me for a couch and felt the arms of Sri Krishn around me, the arms of my Friend and Lover. This was the first use of the deeper vision He gave me. I looked at the prisoners in the jail, the thieves, the murderers, the swindlers, and as I looked at them I saw Vasudeva, it was Narayana whom I found in these darkened souls and misused bodies. Amongst these thieves and dacoits there were many who put me to shame by their sympathy, their kindness, the humanity triumphant over such adverse circumstances."

“I looked and it was not the Magistrate whom I saw, it was Vasudeva, it was Narayana who was sitting there on the bench. I looked at the Prosecuting Counsel and it was not the Counsel for the prosecution that I saw; it was Sri Krishna who sat there, it was my Lover and Friend who sat there and smiled. "Now do you fear?" He said, "I am in all men and I overrule their actions and their words. My protection is still with you and you shall not fear. This case, which is brought against you, leave it in my hand. It is not for you. It was not for the trial that I brought you here but for something else. The case itself is only a means for my work and nothing more."

What becomes clear from studying the experiences of Sri Aurobindo is that one can experience the enlightened state and remember, feel, see and live it. The soul dose not cease to have an individual existence. True enough in the state of Non-Duality, one becomes one with everything, one is everything and everything becomes one.

These experiences of Sri Aurobindo, in his own words contradict the view held by some that in the Non-Dual state as the ego is annihilated, it ceases to exist and hence enlightenment cannot be experienced.

  1. This experience of Sri Aurobindo cannot be called Non-Dual experience, as the experience/perception/knowledge of the Trio of Perceiver,Perceived Object and Act of Perception existed/persisted. But it can be called very high level of Savikalpa Samadhi. cf: Vaasudeva: Sarvamiti sa mahatma sudurlabha: ( Bhag. Gita)

  2. why do ego cease to exist in non-dualism? If I consider myself being the thing and thing is myself and if I consider whole of existence is nothing but me, then the ego goes for beyond normal ego and engulfs whole universe, I become united with the Lord Krishna. I didn't say I didn't exist, but all existence are me. Read it some-where in Osho book, that this sort of thinking can lead to enlightenment as well as exact opposite of this, believing I doesn't exist and only Lord Krishna exists. Both gives union with Lord, then why not do the first one?
