How to Chant Gayatri Mantra without Purashcharan

In this post, I have written about the Purashcharan procedure of gaining Siddhi over the Gayatri Mantra and if doing Purashcharan is not possible for you then how to chant the Gayatri Mantra to bring peace and prosperity into your lives.

Purashcharan of a Mantra - Japa, Homa, Tarpan, Marjan and Brahman Bhojan is not possible for most people because of the time, effort and sometimes even the cost incurred for these rituals.

How to Chant Gayatri Mantra by Lay-Persons

Basic Procedure of Purashcharan of the Gayatri Mantra
1] There are 24 letters in the Gayatri Mantra hence Brahman Bhojan or Offering Meals and Dakshina should be done for 24 Brahmans.

2] Marjan or a sprinkling of liquids should be done 240 times or 10 times that of Brahman Bhojan.

3] Tarpan or offerings to ancestors should be done 2400 times, which is 10 times that of Marjan.

4] Homa should be performed 24, 000 times or 10 times that of the Tarpan ritual.

5] Lastly, the Gayatri Mantra should be chanted 2, 40, 000 times. A Rudraksha Beads Jaap Mala is most suitable for counting the number of Mantra Chants.

The basic Purashcharan procedure has been mentioned above, there are some other more complicated procedures and rituals involved which are recommended by some practitioners of Gayatri Mantra Vidya.

If Purashcharan is not possible then how to chant the Gayatri Mantra
Most people will be uncomfortable with the Purashcharan procedure and most will even stop thinking about chanting this most sacred Mantra.

In this case, the Lay-person can do the following.
1] Cleanliness and hygiene are always essential while chanting this most devotional Hindu Mantra. Hence, chanting the Gayatri Mantra after having a bath and wearing fresh clothes is always preferable.

2] The Gayatri Mantra can be chanted for 10 Malas or1080 times daily or if that is not possible then it can be chanted for1 Mala or 108 Mantra Chants. If chanting even 1 Mala is not possible, then chanting the Gayatri Mantra 28 times daily is sufficient to bring happiness and abundance into your life.

  1. Thank you so much. If we chant the Gayatri mantra for a specific God or Goddess (like "Ohm tatpurushaya vidmahe mahadevaye dheemahi tanno Rudra prachodayat") , does it have the same effect as THE Gayatrie mantra? Or do we need to chant both Gayatrie mantra's? Please guide me.
