Auspicious and Inauspicious Tithis

The human life cycle has been basically divided into 2 parts; the auspicious and the inauspicious. The roots of these 2 parts are the Tithis. A Tithi is an Indian Lunar Day and can be found out from the Hindu Lunar Calendar.

The practitioners of Mantra and Tantra Siddhi, sometimes look for auspicious Tithis to commence the Mantra or Tantra Sadhana, Havan or Pooja as this is considered as the most fruitful period in gaining success.

There are basically 5 kinds of Tithis – Nanda, Bhadra, Rikta, Jaya and Poorna. An easy way to calculate which Tithi is auspicious and when is as follows –

If Nanda Tithi falls on a Friday, Bhadra on a Wednesday, Rikta on Saturday and Poorna on a Thursday, then they are at their most auspicious and hence these are the most auspicious periods for gaining Siddhi. Jaya Tithi is considered as moderate on most weekly days. If it is specifically indicated that the Sadhhana has to be commenced on an auspicious Tithi; then these are the recommended Tithis. If it is not indicated, then simply ignore it.

Sometimes Mantra Sadhanas are said to be most potent on specific days like Holi, Navratri, and Diwali or during the Period of an Amavasya or Poornima or during a Solar or Lunar Eclipse and here the Tithi is not taken into consideration.
