Deva Manushya and Rakshasa Gana in Astrology

Most people possessing even a basic knowledge of Hindu Vedic Astrology will be aware of the three basic character groupings in a Kundali of the Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa Gana.  These groupings are based upon the birth Nakshatra or Constellations, which are again classified into three broad types based upon these three Ganas.  The literal translation of Dev, Manushya and Rakshasa in English is God, Human and Demon. Interestingly they also correspond to the three Gunas; Satvik, Rajsik and Tamsik Gunas or Pure, Materialistic and Evil or Dark qualities.

On the higher level, the groupings lead towards the Hindu Divine Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva or the Creator, the Protector and the Destroyer. These three traits or qualities are present in each and every thing in the Universe, including living beings. The proportion may differ according to the type of Gana or Guna the subject or thing falls under.

In everyday astrology the Gunas are one of the factors, which influence the matching of the horoscopes of prospective life partners for compatibility. They also enable astrologers to predict the basic character traits while studying the horoscope an individual.

However, it must be noted that not everything is so simple and straightforward and there are numerous other astrological combinations and factors, which influence an individual and his character.  In this post, I have described the basic traits of the Dev, Manushya and Rakshasa Ganas based upon on my study of an ancient Hindu Astrological text.

Dev Gana
The one who is born on a Dev Gana respects the Guru [teacher, including a religious preacher or spiritual guide], Brahmin [priest or servant of God] and the Gods. He will be possess a saintly face and body and he will have knowledge of the Shastras [texts and scriptures, including religious, social and political works]

Manushya Gana
The one born on a Manushya Gana will worship the Gods and will enjoy the material luxuries of life, including women, good clothes, jewellery and vehicles. He is described as an Annadata [provider or source of food and employment],Dhanwan [rich, wealthy and owning land and property] and Santatiwan [one having children]

Rakshasa Gana
The one born on a Rakshasa Gana will be inclined towards committing sins and evil deeds secretly and behind the back of others, including friends and loved ones. Some of the basic character traits are highlighted below.
Tamsik Vritti [inclined towards evil deeds]
Doshi [guilty]
Papi [sinful]
Dharmishta [religious and inclined towards religion]
Kalahapriya [found of strife, fights and disagreements]
Nishtur [heartless or cruel]
