Shiva Mantras for Maha Shivratri

Maha Shivaratri is one of the most important and revered of the Hindu festivals. Translated into English Maha Shivratri means “the great night of Shiva”. Maha Shivaratri falls every year on the Chaturdashi or the 14th night of the Krishna Paksha or the dark fortnight in the Hindu Lunar month of Magha.

Traditional Indian religious practices highlight some specific Shiva Mantras for the occasion of Maha Shivratri. It is a common practice to fast for the entire period of Shivratri and worship Shiva during each Prahar and the Nishit Kaal at night.

According to Indian Cosmology a day is sub divided into 8 units or Prahars. A Prahar is a time unit of approximately 3 hours or so. These Prahars are calculated for the entire day commencing from Sunrise to Sunrise.

Nishit Kaal is that period of time approximately around midnight which is considered most auspicious for any kind of worship; it normally falls in between the 2nd and 3rd Prahar.

The timings for the Prahar and Nishit Kaal are given in the Hindu Lunar Calendar and depend upon the geographical location of the place you live in.

In this post I have given specific Shiva Mantras to meditate upon Shiva for each Prahar of the night and the Nishit Kaal. These mantras are considered to be most fruitful and beneficial during Maha Shivratri.
