KRIYA YOGA

The technique of Kriya yoga has been practiced in India for centuries, Yogis have been practicing this technique either in secrecy solitude, in secret places or caves in the Himalayas this has been going on for centuries.

As is the popular impression that the technique of kriya yoga was never lost, it did not come to the public eye because there was a veil of secrecy surrounding it; this included secret initiation from master to disciple.

This technique was made popular in the west by the great yogi Paramahamsa Yogananada by his teachings and also in the best seller The Autobiography of an Yogi. Yogananda describes Kriya Yoga thus "The Kriya Yogi mentally directs his life energy to revolve, upward and downward, around the six spinal centers (medullary, cervical, dorsal, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal plexuses) which correspond to the twelve astral signs of the zodiac, the symbolic Cosmic Man. One-half minute of revolution of energy around the sensitive spinal cord of man effects subtle progress in his evolution; that half-minute of Kriya equals one year of natural spiritual unfoldment."

According to Yogananda, Kriya Yoga was well known in ancient India but was eventually lost, due to undue secrecy. Yogananda says that Krishna refers to Kriya Yoga in the Bhagavad Gita-
''Offering inhaling breath into the outgoing breath, and offering the outgoing breath into the inhaling breath, the yogi neutralizes both these breaths; he thus releases the life force from the heart and brings it under his control.''

"The Kriya technique will bring you to the source of inspiration and will give you answers, clear the brain and stimulate it, strengthen the medulla, and open the spiritual eye, as well as greatly magnetize the body.

Yogananda further states in the Autobiography of an yogi.”By this method, the blood becomes so oxygenated that gradually dependence upon mortal breath becomes less and less. In this way the student of Self-Realization lives more by the Word of God, or Cosmic Energy, and less by the bread of life, or breath and solid and liquid foods. When the current is sent through and around the spine, the higher perception of God in the spine and brain is felt. The spinal cells then become the whole body.

Paramahamsa Yogananada founder of Kriya Yoga
Paramahamsa Yogananada
"These are control of prana exercises and not ordinary breathing exercises. Numberless students have practiced these Kriya techniques with the greatest benefit to their spiritual and moral growth."

The source of all meditation techniques lie in the Bhagwat Geeta which is the divine source of knowledge, the teachings in the Bhagwat Geeta have been adapted by various masters in their own way, but all eventually lead to the ultimate source of the Bhagwat Geeta.

Breath is the essence of life and as stated in the Bhagwat Geeta when there is total concentration on breath one bridges the gap between two breaths, and life source in the breath goes to those parts of the body where they are most needed, concentration on the breath frees the mind of the thought process and thus the life energy is freed to be used for its natural purpose. The breath thus freed rejuvenates the entire body, the blood, and the cells and accelerates the process of divine body divine mind.
