The Ganga is the holiest river in India. The river Ganga is in Hinduism worshiped as a Goddess, evidence of the worship of Ganga can be found in the earliest of the sacred Hindu scriptures the Rig-Veda.

Hindus believe that bathing in the Ganga removes all your sins and frees you from the unending cycle of life and death. Millions of Hindus come to the banks of the Ganga to have a bath. Hindus also immerse the ashes of their relatives in the Ganga as it is said that doing so frees them from the cycle of life and death and they attain Moksha.

The Aarti in praise of the Ganga is very popular in Hinduism. It is recited in Haridwar,Varanasi and other places of pilgrimage on the banks of the Ganga.While reciting the Aarti wick lamps surrounded by flowers and kept in a small cup like container made from leaves are left to float in the river. These Aarties in the evening, with thousands of shinning lamps on the water are a magnificent spectacle.

चंद्र सी ज्योति तुम्हारी, जल निर्मल आता ।
शरण पड़े जो तेरी , सो नर तर जाता ॥

पुत्र सगर के तारे, सब जग को ज्ञाता ।
कृपा दृष्टि हो तुम्हारी, त्रिभुवन सुख दाता ॥

एक बार जो प्राणी, शरण तेरी आता ।
यम की त्रास मिटाकर, परमगति पाता ॥
