जब तक किसी मंत्र की सिद्धि हेतु पुरश्चरण मे संख्या निर्धारित न हो,मंत्र मे जितने अक्षर हों उतने लाख की संख्या मे जप किया जाता है .उदाहरणार्थ-श्री मंगल चंडिका स्तोत्र मे इक्कीस अक्षर हैं,किंतु सिद्धि के लिए जप संख्या दस लाख नियत की गई है .(दश लक्ष जपेनैव मंत्रसिद्धिर्भवेत नृणाम)
मंत्र जाप की संख्या के दशांश संख्या मे हवन किया जाता है .
कम संख्या मे मंत्र जाप किया जाना हो,तो करमाला के रूप मे हाथ मे जप कर सकते हैं .इसमे दाहिने हाथ की उँगुलियों को मिलाकर(सटा कर)अंगूठे से गिनती करते हैं.अनामिका के बीच वाले पोर से गिनती शुरू होती है .करमाला मे विधि समझ कर ही जप करना चाहिए,अन्यथा जप निष्फल होता है .
