KABIR ON THE WORD

Kabir the great mystic, saint and poet, was a realized person. Kabir through his poetry, written in simple language spoke of his experiences in realization and awareness. The language used is very simple and easy to understand, and not the one which was used in his times, full of technical and religious terms.

Kabir in this poem speaks of the Universal sound OM, which signifies God. Everyone speaks about it as if he has firsthand knowledge about it. The saints and mystics speak about it with authority, yet no one knows about it. The whole world is arguing about it, as if the ultimate source has disclosed the mystery to them, yet they don't even have the slightest idea what is it they are arguing about.

Even the realized souls cannot fully understand it. Everyone wants to know and experience it, yet they do not know what is it they want to experience and merge their souls with. Kabir say that God is a mystery, you practice various methods to get to know him, yet you do not know what you are practicing and why.

This poem of Kabir has been translated in English by the translated by the great poet, novelist, musician, and playwright, Rabindranath Tagore. I request all those on the spiritual path to dwell for some time on this poem. So as to grasp the hidden meaning behind it.

Receive that Word from which the Universe springeth!
That word is the Guru; I have heard it, and become the disciple.
How many are there who know the meaning of that word?
O Sadhu! Practice that Word!
The Vedas and the Puranas proclaim it,
The world is established in it,
The Rishis and devotees speak of it:
But none knows the mystery of the Word.
The householder leaves his house when he hears it,
The ascetic comes back to love when he hears it,
The Six Philosophies expound it,
The Spirit of Renunciation points to that Word,
From that Word the world-form has sprung,
That Word reveals all.
Kabîr says: "But who knows whence the Word cometh?

  2. Thanks for sharing. I love Kabir's poetry. "I do not quote from the scriptures; I simply see what I see." Isn't that wonderful?
